Research is at the heart of the School of Geography, Archaeology & Irish Studies. Over the years, our researchers have made significant contributions to understanding some of the most pressing challenges facing society, from climate change and environmental sustainability to cultural heritage, identity, and social transformation.

Our interdisciplinary research spans environmental change, palaeoecology, archaeology, heritage studies, rural development, planning, geopolitics, Irish culture, language and society. Through innovative fieldwork, laboratory research, archival studies and community partnerships, we generate knowledge that informs policy, supports heritage preservation, and contributes to sustainable futures.

The School is home to internationally recognised research groups and collaborates with partners across Ireland and around the world. Our research has attracted competitive funding, produced high-impact publications, and fostered strong engagement with policymakers, communities, cultural organisations and industry.

By combining disciplinary expertise with a commitment to real-world impact, the School continues to advance understanding of people, places and cultures while addressing the environmental and societal challenges of the twenty-first century.
