SCHOOL OF GEOGRAPHY, ARCHAEOLOGY AND IRISH STUDIES
The School of Geography, Archaeology & Irish Studies at the University of Galway is a dynamic, research-intensive academic community dedicated to understanding people, places, cultures, environments and heritage across Ireland and the wider world. Bringing together the disciplines of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies, the School offers a distinctive interdisciplinary environment where students engage with contemporary global challenges, historical landscapes and Ireland’s rich cultural traditions.
The School has built a strong reputation for excellence in both teaching and research, supported by highly committed staff, a student-centred ethos and extensive national and international collaborations. Experiential and field-based learning lies at the heart of its programmes, enabling students to develop practical, analytical and communication skills through fieldwork, laboratory training, community engagement and independent research projects.
Research within the School addresses some of the most pressing issues facing society today, including environmental change, sustainability, geopolitics, rural development, planning, heritage management and the historical, cultural and social development of modern Ireland. Through its research clusters and partnerships, the School contributes to local, national and global conversations while advancing knowledge that supports sustainable and inclusive futures.
With approximately 800 undergraduate students and a vibrant postgraduate and research community, the School provides an intellectually stimulating environment where students are encouraged to explore the relationships between people, places and cultures, and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful impact in their future careers and communities.

We are delighted to announce that the School has been awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze Award, recognising our strong and sustained commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. Undergraduates
The School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies has an enrolment of over 800 undergraduate students. Our students acquire a wide range of analytical, technical and communication skills that are valuable and highly sought after by many sectors of employment. Experiential and field-based learning are central to our undergraduate programme, as exemplified in our commitment to undergraduate dissertation projects and module-specific field and laboratory training.
International Students
The School's programmes have gained an international reputation, and students have joined our School from China, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Kosovo, Malawi, Nigeria, Norway, Russia, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam.
