Why Choose This Course?
Course Information
Who is this course for?
The Professional Master of Education (PME) at University of Galway is a recognised Initial Teacher Education (ITE) postgraduate programme. This two-year, full-time Masters programme provides the requisite professional knowledge, understanding and pedagogical skills for post-primary teaching.
The PME is a Teaching Council of Ireland (TCI) accredited ITE programme for the purposes of registration as a post-primary teacher (pupils aged 12–18 years) in the Republic of Ireland. It is recognised as a teaching qualification in the EU, Great Britain, and Australia.
At the School of Education (SoE), our mission is to educate passionate, knowledgeable, innovative, inclusive and caring graduates who embrace diversity, change and uncertainty, and who ask critical questions about education and schooling.
What will I study?
The programme is organised in a modular fashion. The modules and related learning outcomes correspond to the required components of an ITE programme, as specified by The Teaching Council’s Céim: Standards for Initial Teacher Education.
Through the taught components of the program, students are introduced to: theoretical? frameworks and contemporary issues within foundational disciplines; to professional studies of education; and to a variety of teaching strategies, models, philosophies and approaches. These cover planning, assessment, classroom management and other relevant areas that are important for achieving teaching and learning objectives. School placement blocks, which are interspersed throughout the academic year, provide the opportunity for students to apply theory to practice in a real-world context.

Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
- Required Core Subject
- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.

Year 2 offers an 11-week school placement block which allows for a deep professional learning experience. Global Citizenship Education: Every graduate receives the Global Teacher Award.
- Professional Input: Most of our subject specific methodologies are facilitated by practicing post-primary teachers.
- Guest Lectures: We host a wide variety of educational specialists to critically discuss contemporary issues and realities of education.
- Micro-teaching: Prior to going out on your first teaching placement you will get the opportunity to practice your teaching with your peers in a recorded class, to later review with one of our faculty members.

Please be aware that certain subjects are in higher demand, and consequently are more competitive. While this varies, the subjects of Geography, English, History, and Business are highly competitive each year and an overall undergraduate H2.2 result without additional qualifications or teaching experience may not be successful due to high demand.
Those who only have one subject may also be disadvantaged when compared to those with two subjects.
All applications are considered in the context of the total applicant pool for that year, as a result, the points of successful applications are dynamic.
