About the Centre

This Centre is a new partnership between Ward & Burke and the University of Galway applying first principles and data-driven engineering to primary infrastructure. The Centre brings together academic research, physical testing and AI technologies to transform how infrastructure is designed, built and operated to address real challenges in a rapidly changing world. The Centre will also create scholarships and research and innovation opportunities for the next generation of engineers.

Monitoring nitrous oxide process emissions in wastewater

Monitoring nitrous oxide process emissions in wastewater

Lessons from an ongoing monitoring programme in Enniscorthy wastewater treatment plant in Ireland

Aeration is the most energy-intensive process in wastewater treatment, typically accounting for 50-75% of total plant electricity consumption, while also contributing to greenhouse gas emissions through the production of nitrous oxide (N₂O). This research project investigates how advanced monitoring, modelling, and control strategies can improve aeration system performance, reducing energy consumption and process emissions without compromising effluent quality.
