About Us
Student Counselling offers free, confidential one-to-one counselling, both in person and online, for all registered undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with a variety of group counselling options to support your wellbeing.
Seeking counselling is completely normal and encouraged - it’s a sign of strength and resourcefulness, not weakness. Each year, we support around 10% of the student population, and we’re here to help with any issue, large or small.
Students seek support for a wide range of concerns. These may include academic stress and performance anxiety, low mood or depression, and challenges with self-esteem or identity. Many also come to counselling to navigate life transitions, explore questions around gender identity and sexuality, or work through family and relationship difficulties.
Feelings of loneliness and isolation, experiences of bereavement or loss, and the impact of sexual trauma are also common reasons students reach out. Additionally, support is available for those dealing with eating difficulties, or concerns around alcohol or drug use, among other issues.
What to Expect When You Contact Us
To book an appointment with a counsellor, email counselling@universityofgalway.ie using your University of Galway email address. We’ll then send you a link to complete the registration forms. Once submitted, you’ll be added to our waiting list. Appointments are typically offered within two weeks, though wait times may be longer during peak periods.
Your first session will be an initial assessment with a counsellor, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore your concerns, discuss the impact they’re having on you, and identify your goals for counselling. Speaking with a counsellor can help you gain perspective and respond more effectively to your challenges.
Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place in a confidential, non-judgemental, and professional setting where you’re encouraged to express yourself openly. Some issues may be resolved in a single session, while more complex concerns may need ongoing support. Our service is focused and short-term, with most students attending up to four sessions.
We can also connect you with other supports, including internal Student Services and external professional resources. To help maintain positive mental health after counselling, we encourage students to access online supports like Togetherall.
The service is fully confidential unless there is a serious risk to you or someone else. If you're in crisis and need urgent support, please let us know—we will offer a same-day appointment.
Where are we located?
Our main office is 5 Distillery Road (H91 TKW3). Our opening hours are 9am–1pm and 2–5pm Monday to Friday. During term time, we also offer appointments on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.
