PPS Number Application
Providing Your PPS Number
Your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) is a unique reference number that is needed for all dealings with public service agencies, including Revenue and Department of Social Protection.
You must provide your PPS number to HR.
Providing your PPS number ensures you are taxed correctly from your first payment and that all state contributions and entitlements are accurately recorded.

Finding an Existing PPS Number
You may already have a PPS Number. It can appear on documents such as a Public Services Card, tax correspondence, medical cards, or payslips. (More information is available through official PPSN guidance.)
Who can apply for a PPS Number?
To apply for a PPS Number you must:
- Not have been issued a PPS Number before
- Have a valid reason for applying. For example,you may need a PPS Number to pay tax when starting a job.

1. PPS Number Application Checklist for Residents in Ireland
A. Set Up Your Digital Access
- Create or log into your MyGovID account (basic or verified).
B. Prepare Required Documents
- Proof of Identity (passport, EU/EEA ID, Irish/UK driving licence)
- Proof of Address (<3 months old; utility bill, official letter, financial statement)
· Temporary hotel/Airbnb bookings not accepted in 2026. - Proof of Why You Need a PPSN (employment, education, Revenue, etc.)
C. Apply Online
- Submit through MyWelfare.ie with clear document scans.
D. Attend In‑Person Appointment
- Mandatory for residents; bring all required documents.
E. After Submission

- Upload high‑quality scans (no photos).
D. Appointment Requirements
- Usually no in‑person appointment required for overseas applicants.

E. Processing
- Typical timeline for non‑resident/overseas: 6–8 weeks.
3. PPS Number Application Checklist for Non‑Residents (Exceptional Circumstances)
Non‑residents may apply only under exceptional, documented need—e.g., Revenue registration, employment.
