The Race Equality Champions Programme at the University of Galway is a member-based initiative dedicated to increasing awareness, knowledge, and active support in addressing racism, while supporting racialised colleagues and students.

Led by the Office of the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, the programme works with staff, students, and the wider community to create a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment grounded in equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Applications to the Race Equality Champions Programme will be open in 2026. 

Steps to Become a Champion

 1 Commit to Race Equality
  • Open to all staff who support a zero-tolerance approach to racism.

2 Complete  Training
  • Participate in courses such as Race Equality and Active Bystander Training.

  • Gain foundational knowledge to confidently support racial equality initiatives.

3 Review Key Resources and Policies
  • Familiarise yourself with University policies and resources relating to race equality.

  • Use this knowledge to guide your actions and advocacy.

4 Engage in Shared Learning
  • Attend at least one race equality per year to engage in discussion, reflection, and shared learning with colleagues and students.

5 Receive Champion Recognition
  • Once registered and training criteria are met, Champions receive:

    • An information pack

    • Visible symbols of Allyship

    • Listing on the official Champions register

6 Ongoing Development and Advocacy
  • Access ongoing training, awareness campaigns, and resources.

  • Participate in initiatives to advocate for race equality across the University and the wider community.
