Overview
The Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation (PIVC) micro-credential is an innovative professional development opportunity offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Galway. This Level 9 postgraduate program (5 ECTS) equips healthcare professionals with advanced skills in one of the most common clinical procedures, using cutting-edge ultrasound and vessel locating technology to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be 21 years of age and Hold a Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree. Applicants must already possess training in venepuncture and peripheral intravenous cannulation. A letter of support from their clinical setting confirming access to an appropriate clinical mentor will be required.
What you will Learn
Purpose:
This micro-credential addresses the growing need for specialised vascular access skills in modern healthcare. The program advances assessment, planning, and decision-making skills alongside insertion and management techniques for ultrasound-guided PIVC. Students will gain proficiency in vessel health preservation, procedural expertise using ultrasound guidance, and evidence-based management of vascular access devices.

Context:
Using a flexible blended learning approach, the 6-week program combines asynchronous online theoretical components with hands-on practical training in state-of-the-art simulation laboratories. Through innovative teaching methodologies including self and peer evaluation, procedural simulation, and clinical competency assessment, participants will develop mastery in this specialised skill.
Upon completion, graduates possess competency in ultrasound-guided PIVC insertion, positioning them as specialists in their clinical settings and enhancing their career advancement opportunities.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level 9.
