Overview
This module is designed to give learners opportunities to explore current concepts in the management of lower extremity wounds to enable critical practice in this specialised area of care. The demands of wound care and prevention require comprehensive and detailed analysis of the physiological and psychosocial components of the patient experience along with technical and practical skills to perform holistic assessment and to provide safe and effective treatments based upon current evidence. Module content is therefore based upon current best practice and evidence-based guidelines, while also being cognisant of the psychosocial issues and significant impact that lower extremity wounds can cause for those affected.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be 21 years of age. Applicants must hold an Honours degree or higher diploma (level 8) ideally in a relevant healthcare field, if no level 8 must demonstrate that they have successfully completed (in previous two-years) a module at M level (level 9). We also require professional registration with a regulatory body i.e. CORU or NMBI for entry onto the module.
What you will Learn
- Establish a detailed understanding and awareness of wound healing physiology and critique factors that contribute to non-healing states and chronicity of wounds.
- Recognise and appraise (i) patient and wound related factors that might inform a prognosis for healing and influence appropriate management strategies (ii) relevant psychosocial aspects and health related quality of life issues that are known to impact on persons living with chronic wounds.
- Critically evaluate management strategies for the treatment of lower extremity ulceration and formulate an appropriate patient centred management plan based upon the evidence-base/ best practice guidelines for the management of lower extremity wounds.
- Reflect critically upon current developments in health and social policy and legislation which impact upon wound care and prevention and resource allocation.
