Overview

The Ultrasound Guided Midline Catheter (MC) Insertion micro-credential is an advanced professional development program offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Galway. This Level 9 postgraduate qualification (5 ECTS) provides specialised training in midline catheter insertion techniques using ultrasound guidance, building upon foundational vascular access skills to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age and hold a Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree.

The program is designed for registered healthcare professionals who:

  • Have completed the Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation micro-credential OR be currently employed where they currently insert Midline catheters.
  • Already possess training and competence in venepuncture and peripheral intravenous cannulation.
  • Can secure a letter of support from their clinical setting confirming access to an appropriate clinical mentor.

What you will Learn

This micro-credential addresses the growing demand for specialised vascular access expertise beyond basic cannulation. The program develops advanced assessment, planning, and decision-making capabilities for ultrasound-guided midline catheter insertion and management.

Students will master the entire lifecycle of a midline catheter—from patient assessment and device selection through insertion technique to complication management and removal—all within a vessel health preservation framework.

Delivered through a flexible blended learning model, this 6-week program combines asynchronous online theoretical instruction with hands-on skill development in state-of-the-art simulation laboratories. The curriculum utilizes innovative assessment approaches including self and peer evaluation, deliberate practice, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE), and competency validation in clinical settings.

Graduates will gain validated expertise in midline catheter insertion, positioning them as vascular access specialists in their healthcare environments while enhancing their professional advancement opportunities.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level 9.
