Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Galway invites you to a guest lecture by Professor Stephen Henighan from the University of Guelph, Canada taking place on Tuesday 24th February at 16:00 in THB-G010 titled "History After History's End: Sergio Ramírez's Margarita, está linda la mar."
This novel, which shared the 1998 Alfaguara Prize, uses postmodern techniques to narrate the assassination of the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza García in 1956. Prof. Henighan will explore the ways in which these techniques enable Ramírez, while narrating events from the 1950s, to address the crises created by the end of Cold War-era Latin American assumptions of revolutionary commitment and patriarchy.
