Conversions in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe since 1800:
Religious, National, Ideological and Sexual
University of Galway, 16-17 June 2026
This conference explores different forms of conversion in a region shaped by great religious diversity, competing national projects, ideological extremes and contested sexualities. Papers from the disciplines of History, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Religious Studies, Law and Political Science examine the spectrum of conversion, from personal to political, voluntary to forced, gradual to sudden, temporary to permanent, discreet to visible, sincere to opportunistic, beneficial to life-threatening. Keynote lectures address forced conversion in postwar eastern Europe and changing attitudes to gender transition in Poland.
Schedule can be found Conversions Conference Programme 16-17 June 2026.pdf.
Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. For queries, please email the conference organisers at roisin.healy@universityofgalway.ie or gearoid.barry@universityofgalway.ie
